DANCE ON ENSEMBLE
Works in Silence by Lucinda Childs

Lucinda Childs is one of the most prolific and important choreographers of our time. She was part of the revolutionary Judson Dance Theater movement in 1960s New York and her minimalist, postmodern works of the 1970s made dance history. Focusing on structure and variation, she creates choreographies that transform minimalist movements into complex patterns and demand the highest degree of precision from the dancers.

The “Works in Silence” offer insights into a decisive development phase in her career. Ty Boomershine, the artistic director of the Dance On Ensemble, is a former member of her company and her long-time artistic assistant. He chose a series of her early works, in which she focuses on the passage of the body through space. From walking to running, to skipping, to leaping, Childs explores rapid changes of direction and the effects of minimal shifts in movement patterns.

Most of these pieces have not been seen on stage since they were first shown in the 1970s. Their restaging by the Dance On Ensemble ensures that audiences today can once again experience these rare, mesmerising works.

“Works in Silence” includes the following works by Lucinda Childs:

Untitled Trio I & II
Congeries on Edges of 20 Obliques
Katema
Radial Courses
Melody Excerpt

This production is also performed as part of the mixed evening "Dancing Replies" alongside "MARMO", a choreographic 'reply' to the "Works in Silence" by the artist duo Ginevra Panzetti/Enrico Ticconi.
