In her interview with TANZFONDS, Lady Deborah MacMillan talks about her role as the heiress to her husband’s work and about transmitting his choreographies to the next generation.

SAARLAND STATE THEATRE:
Anastasia/Shadow

The one-act ballet Anastasia, which was created by Kenneth MacMillan in 1967 during his time as ballet director at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, was one of his biggest successes. The choreography was created with both classical ballet and expressionist dance in mind. The ballet company of the Saarland State Theatre produced an exact reconstruction of the Berlin premiere from 1967 with original costumes and stage design. The company contrasted the reconstruction with a new production, Shadow.

For Shadow, Marguerite Donlon took her inspiration from three extremely different personalities: the authors Virginia Woolf and Sarah Kane as well as the musician Kurt Cobain trod their creative paths with uncompromising clarity but ultimately fell to pieces as a result of inner conflict. Based on her 2006 choreography Schatten (Shadows), which was set to music by Claas Willeke, and using additional compositions by Sam Auinger, Donlon developed an atmospheric piece full of expressive correlations of movement, text and music.
