Nils Freyer:
FIVE PRELUDES BY MARIANNE VOGELSANG FROM J.S. BACH’S WELL-TEMPERED CLAVIER
Born in Dresden in 1912, Marianne Vogelsang studied dance with Gret Palucca and was one of the pioneers of German Expressionist Dance. From 1971 to 1973, shortly before her death, she choreographed Fünf Präludien (Five Preludes), which took a subtle look at Bach’s work and which she passed on to the Dresden dancer and choreographer Manfred Schnelle as her final work and legacy.
In order to preserve Vogelsang’s choreographers for the future, Schnelle agreed to pass on his knowledge to a younger generation of dancers and to teach Fünf Präludien to the Berlin dancer Nils Freyer.
Schnelle died on 19 February 2016, shortly before the end of his work with Freyer. He was 80 years of age.
Michaela Isabel Fünfhausen, who was also taught Fünf Präludien by Schnelle, completed the choreography with Freyer, supported by Ingrid Borchardt, a former Professor of Modern Dance at the Palucca University of Dance in Dresden.
The pianist Ulrike Buschendorf, the accompanist for Freyer’s performances, was playing Bach’s preludes in the unusual order adopted by Vogelsang.
