WILHELM GROENER
performing archive

The Berlin-based artists Mariola Groener and Günther Wilhelm have been collaborating under the name of WILHELM GROENER since 2001, working at the intersection of dance, performance and visual art. Together they have developed a repertoire that spans works for the stage, site-specific pieces, lecture demonstrations and exhibitions. Visual artist Mariola Groener and dancer/choreographer Günther Wilhelm’s oeuvre includes 25 stage works, numerous editions of their long-term performance project 33 SKIZZEN, several video works, print editions and publications.

2020 saw the birth of the multi-year project “performing archive”, in which WILHELM GROENER explore the links between the supposedly contradictory concepts of ‘the archival’ and ‘the performative’. Working in a variety of formats, the two artists conduct research into their own artistic legacy and heritage, finding ways to rejuvenate it and pass it on. How can an archive be performative? What might it represent? How can performances be archived? Can bodies be understood as archives? And can a body of work be seen as a ‘transformative machine’ that continually offers up new aspects of performativity? The project’s artistic outputs include a variety of new choreographic works and performances, as well as publications, film works, online projects and installations.
