> DOCUMENTATION 2013

In the interview, Ana Vujanovic and Saša Asentic talk about Jean Weidt, dance’s political dimension and the fact that revolutions can’t take place on stage.

Saša Asentic:
Revolution won't be performed

“Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it." Using the Communist choreographer Jean Weidt (from Hamburg-Bambek) and his group Die Roten Tänzer (The Red Dancers) as its staring point, the project took a critical look at the most recent revolutions in European society.

REVOLUTION WON'T BE PERFORMED examined the role of dance and performance in these liminal moments in history. Kampnagel Hamburg presented the premiere of the project, which discussed the extent to which revolution can be portrayed on stage, the linking of dance, war and work, and the role of art in today’s and tomorrow’s society.

In the interview, Ana Vujanovic and Saša Asentic talk about Jean Weidt, the political dimension of dance, and the fact that revolutions cannot take place on stage.

Sub Topic Image 3:Revolution won't be performed

There is a great struggle happening today, a new war on the people. The latest attempts to privatise every last inch of public space, to take back the rights our grandparents fought for, to destroy the environment of the planet that feeds us, are just some of the most visible ones. The rabbit hole goes much deeper. In order to defeat us, the forces of Capital are still using the same tactics, trying to divide us across old nation-state borders, and the new internal borders caused by the latest wave of migration.

These tactics were proven effective in the last 30 years but the bare existence of our Movement shows that they are no more. There are eight million of our militants in Europe today, yet there is not a moment in time we can perceive as the moment our revolutionary Movement was formed, not a single place. It grew from all the victories we had in last century as we learned from the mistakes made in our name. There were many after-burns in the second part of the 20th century, ’68 being the biggest, but after the great clashes at the beginning of the 21st century – the battles of Seattle, Prague, Genoa – it seamed that the great unifying narrative of Community disappeared.

During that time, we didn’t only observe other people’s struggles; our movement was born out of a realisation that they ARE our struggles: the peasant movement in Brazil; Maoists in India; Zapatistas who inspired a whole generation of activists; queer and feminist groups in Eastern Europe and other precarious, indignant and outraged groups and individuals worldwide. We had to be inspired from each others procedures, each others politics and modes of living and being together before our revolutionary movement could became what it is today.

And today again, a spectre dancing around the continent makes the armies of the old whore shake with fear, for our 8.4 million strong network of worker/peasant co-operatives, urban guerrilla collectives and hacker groups – under a new name of The Commune – is a force capable of defending what is left of the commons, ready to take back what has always been ours.
